Exact and Perturbation Solutions for the EnsembleDynamicsTodd
This paper presents two approaches to characterize the dynamics of weight space probability density starting from a master equation. In the rst, we provide a class of algorithms for which an exact evaluation of the integrals in the master equation is possible. This enables the time evolution of the density to be calculated at each time step without approximation. In the second, we expand earlie...
متن کاملExact Boundary Conditions for Periodic Waveguides Containing a Local Perturbation
We consider the solution of the Helmholtz equation−∆u(x)−n(x)ωu(x) = f(x), x = (x, y), in a domain Ω which is infinite in x and bounded in y. We assume that f(x) is supported in Ω := {x ∈ Ω |a− < x < a} and that n(x) is x-periodic in Ω\Ω. We show how to obtain exact boundary conditions on the vertical segments, Γ− := {x ∈ Ω |x = a−} and Γ := {x ∈ Ω |x = a}, that will enable us to find the solut...
متن کاملSelf-trapped nonlinear matter waves in periodic potentials.
We demonstrate that the recent observation of nonlinear self-trapping of matter waves in one-dimensional optical lattices [Th. Anker, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 020403 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.94.020403] can be associated with a novel type of broad nonlinear state existing in the gaps of the matter-wave band-gap spectrum. We find these self-trapped localized modes in one-, two-, and three-dimensiona...
متن کاملExact solutions for impulsive gravitational waves∗
All impulsive waves (with no tails) in vacuum backgrounds of constant curvature (i.e. Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) are classified according to whether they are expanding or non-expanding. It is demonstrated that the expanding waves may, in some sense, be regarded as impulsive limits of Robinson–Trautman type N solutions.
متن کاملTrapped surfaces, horizons and exact solutions in higher dimensions
A very simple criterion to ascertain if (D − 2)-surfaces are trapped in arbitrary D-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds is given. The result is purely geometric, independent of the particular gravitational theory, of any field equations or of any other conditions. Many physical applications arise, a few shown here: a definition of general horizon, which reduces to the standard one in black holes/r...
